The Ferrari FF: A Powerful and Practical Four-Wheel Drive
The Ferrari FF is Ferrari’s first four-wheel drive model. A practical and reliable sports car which is powerful, quick and exciting to drive. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011 as a replacement for the 612 Scaglietti, at the time of its introduction, the FF had the largest road-going Ferrari engine ever produced.
It uses the same 6.3 liter V12 as in a F12 Berlinetta which produces 651 hp and reaches a top speed of 200 mph. Upon its release, Ferrari claimed it was the world’s fastest four-seater sports car. The Ferrari FF 0-60 mph time is around 3.5 seconds.
Once again, like all Ferrari vehicles, the name has a specific meaning. The letters FF represent “Ferrari Four” - for four seats and the four-wheel drive.
Its unusual styling has been described as a sporty vehicle that combines a hatchback with the qualities of 2 door estate. Its exterior is contemporary with pulled-back headlamps like the 458 Italia as well as the tail lights with the twin circular design. An egg-crate grille with four exhaust tips and defined side skirts help achieve their design concept of the “shooting brake” configuration, resembling the shape of a wedge!
The Ferrari FF has a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and paddle shift system similar to the California, 458 Italia and F12 Berlinetta. It also featured a brand new engineered four-wheel drive system called 4RM. The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is the main mechanical component of this new system which provides power intelligence to each of the four wheels as needed and is 50 % lighter than a conventional system.
Maranello’s engineers conducted years of research around Ferrari’s track experience and working closely with their F1 driver they produced a Man-Machine Interface which is the effortless melding of man and car. On the FF every single control is convenient to the eye and hand.
The FF steering wheel controls numerous vehicle operations including Ferrari’s trademark “Manettino” - the red driving mode control switch, the engine start button, turn signals, F1 gear shift paddles and the suspension damping control option.
